DoCoMo, KDDI (au), and SoftBank will offer the 16GB versions of the iPhone 5S for effectively nothing with a two-year contract on certain plans (the so-called "0 Yen Plan"), all three carriers announced Friday. The carriers have posted the pricing plans on their respective Web sites, while the news has been reported widely in Japan. In DoCoMo's case, for example, discounts are applied monthly over the term of the contract -- that means no upfront cost, effectively yielding a free handset. KDDI and SoftBank have similar deals. All three have set monthly data network fees at 5,460 yen (about $55). ![]() Apple may be on track to sell half as many iPhone 5Cs in the first 24 hours as it did with last year's iPhone 5, according to a new report. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster issued a note late Friday saying he expects Apple to tally up first day pre-orders of around 1 million. That would be roughly half the 2 million preorders Apple reported following its first day of presales for last year's iPhone 5, and closer to the company's total ahead of 2011's iPhone 4S. The big difference, of course, is that Apple is now selling two devices -- the less expensive 5C, and the 5S -- both of which are a replacement to last year's iPhone 5, which has been discontinued. The 5C is the only device up for presale at the moment, with Apple planning to begin sales of the 5S at 12:01 a.m. PT next Friday, as well as through its carrier partners. A company called Juicies sells a variety of dock connectors and other cables for mobile devices. The new Kickstarter project dubbed Juicies+ is striving to get funding to create higher-quality, tangle-free cables for smartphones and tablets. And one of those budding cables is a gold one designed to color-coordinate with the upcoming gold version of the iPhone 5S. Juicies promises that it will offer the golden cable if it can raise $120,000. As of Friday morning, pledges stand at $101,916, and there are 48 more days to go. So, it's a safe bet the project will hit its target in the time left. The gold Lightning cable carries a price tag of $18. ![]() is it too soon to start building an iPhone 6 wish list? Because the iPhone 5S, which Apple announced today (along with the cheaper iPhone 5C) to the surprise of no one, represents perhaps the least exciting and most disappointing iPhone update yet. Indeed, just as the iPhone 4S was little more than an iPhone 4 with a few minor upgrades, the iPhone 5S is little more than an iPhone 5 with a few minor upgrades. I'll cop to liking thefingerprint sensor, which adds a much-needed security option for folks who typically don't bother with passcodes and potentially a much faster option for those who do. (I say potentially because it remains to be seen just how quickly a scan gets recognized and unlocks the phone. A swipe and tap-tap-tap to put in a passcode might turn out to be just as fast.) But overall, I find little here to get excited about, and no motivation to trade up from my 4S. Here are the five things I find disappointing about the iPhone 5S: ![]() The Microsoft course reversals -- such as the reintroduction of a Windows Start Button and thecancellation of the "Always On" requirement for Xbox One -- are continuing. The latest 180, announced by the company on September 9, is that MSDN/TechNet subscribers and volume licensees are going to be able to get their hands on the Windows 8.1 release to manufacturing (RTM) bits early, after all. In fact, Microsoft is making the RTM versions ofWindows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro available to those groups Monday, September 9. Microsoft also will be releasing the RTM version of Windows Server 2012 R2 to MSDN/TechNet and volume licensees today. The Windows 8.1 Enterprise SKU will be available to MSDN/TechNet and volume licensees before the end of September, officials said today. The RTM version of Windows 8.1 RT still isn't going to be released early. (Windows 8.1 RT has leaked to the Web, however.) Microsoft's decision, reiterated a couple of weeks ago, was to withhold the RTM bits from everyone until October 18, the official "launch" of the product. This unprecedented move resulted in outcry from many -- especially developers. Some devs maintained they needed the RTM bits to make sure their current Windows apps work with the soon-to-be-released update to Windows 8. (The devs also need the RTM version of Visual Studio 2013 to get their updated Windows apps ready. The near-final but not-yet-RTM version of Visual Studio 2013, the Release Candidate build, is available to developers today, as well. On Saturday, a developer dubbed Winocm tweeted an image of iOS 6.1.4 running Cydia, the popular app used to install software on jailbroken devices. The image shows Cydia version 1.1.8 installed on aniPhone 5. But iOS users anxious to try out the jailbreak on their own iPhone may face a rough time. Unlike other jailbreaks that come as simple downloads, this one requires that you figure out how to tap into the iOS kernel yourself to use Winocm's code to install Cydia, according to Redmond Pie. Apple is expected to announce iOS 7 at a special event on Tuesday, along with one or more new iPhones. Assuming the company follows its usual pattern, the new iOS version would be available to users sometime before the end of the month. CNET will host a live blog of Apple's September 10 event. ![]() It's perhaps one of the most famous -- or infamous -- personnel moves in Silicon Valley history: then Apple CEO John Sculley's 1985 firing of Steve Jobs. But until now, we've never known much about how it happened. At a Forbes conference in Bali last week, however, Sculley opened up about the firing, telling some of the richest and most powerful people on Earth just how he came to deliver Jobs' pink slip. Read More Click Here ![]() When Apple holds events in San Francisco it takes over the entire fronts and sides of buildings with decorations, though the same cannot be said for its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Signage for Tuesday's event there, which is expected to bring two new models of the iPhone, is now up, reports French tech site Igen. There's a top banner above the doors, which looks just like the one depicted in Apple's invite to the media last week, as well as some side dressings with more overlapping colors. Similar decorations went up when Apple held a special event at its campus in October 2011 to introduce the iPhone 4S. As a reminder, Apple's presentation is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PT sharp, and CNET will be there live to bring you the news. We'll have news updates, photos, commentary, and more from the event, along with a live show hosted at CNET's headquarters in San Francisco. |
