"Apple's supposed self-driving electric car efforts may be real -- and far enough along for testing, according to a new report from the Guardian. The publication, citing documents it obtained under a public records act request, said Apple has met with officials from the GoMentum Station, a large former Navy weapons station near San Francisco that is being changed into a high-security testing area for self-driving cars." ~CNET

John Metcalfe, executive vice president and COO at Imagination Technologies, graphics chip supplier to Apple, chatted with CNET for a few minutes about the future.
Imagination's graphics chip technology -- which must manage, among other things, the millions of pixels on the display -- has been used consistently by Apple in its mobile products, and Imagination's technology appears prominently in the iPad Air, iPad Mini Retina, and iPhone 5S. I asked Metcalfe in a recent interview about the future of its graphics chips and, by extension, technologies that could appear in future Apple products -- though the latter is obviously only a decision that Apple can ultimately make. The device uses a robot to "touch" exact coordinates on a screen. It then measures the coordinates of the touch device to see how closely they matched. ![]() Long a neglected market for the Cupertino, Calif.-based company, Apple is said to be ramping up efforts to get iPhones and iPads into the hands of consumers in India. Two top Apple executives in India met Monday with CEO's and top executives of major retailers in the country to discuss a new strategy and marketing vision, according to the Economic Times. The idea is to set up "stores within stores" in the "top 50 tier II and III markets," expanding its presence outside large metropolitan areas and into smaller markets. According to the report, the executives said that Apple wants to build 100 "standalone" stores under the franchise model in these markets. The word "standalone" is a bit confusing in this context, though that presumably refers to these cornered-off stores within stores. To be clear, Apple doesn't have official physical retail stores in India at the moment. DoCoMo, KDDI (au), and SoftBank will offer the 16GB versions of the iPhone 5S for effectively nothing with a two-year contract on certain plans (the so-called "0 Yen Plan"), all three carriers announced Friday. The carriers have posted the pricing plans on their respective Web sites, while the news has been reported widely in Japan. In DoCoMo's case, for example, discounts are applied monthly over the term of the contract -- that means no upfront cost, effectively yielding a free handset. KDDI and SoftBank have similar deals. All three have set monthly data network fees at 5,460 yen (about $55). ![]() Consumers who grab the new gold-hued iPhone 5S and want a matching cable will be able get one once a new Kickstarter project meets its goal.
