![]() is it too soon to start building an iPhone 6 wish list? Because the iPhone 5S, which Apple announced today (along with the cheaper iPhone 5C) to the surprise of no one, represents perhaps the least exciting and most disappointing iPhone update yet. Indeed, just as the iPhone 4S was little more than an iPhone 4 with a few minor upgrades, the iPhone 5S is little more than an iPhone 5 with a few minor upgrades. I'll cop to liking thefingerprint sensor, which adds a much-needed security option for folks who typically don't bother with passcodes and potentially a much faster option for those who do. (I say potentially because it remains to be seen just how quickly a scan gets recognized and unlocks the phone. A swipe and tap-tap-tap to put in a passcode might turn out to be just as fast.) But overall, I find little here to get excited about, and no motivation to trade up from my 4S. Here are the five things I find disappointing about the iPhone 5S: ![]() iOS 6.1.4 has apparently been jailbroken just in advance of the expected announcement of iOS 7. On Saturday, a developer dubbed Winocm tweeted an image of iOS 6.1.4 running Cydia, the popular app used to install software on jailbroken devices. The image shows Cydia version 1.1.8 installed on aniPhone 5. But iOS users anxious to try out the jailbreak on their own iPhone may face a rough time. Unlike other jailbreaks that come as simple downloads, this one requires that you figure out how to tap into the iOS kernel yourself to use Winocm's code to install Cydia, according to Redmond Pie. Apple is expected to announce iOS 7 at a special event on Tuesday, along with one or more new iPhones. Assuming the company follows its usual pattern, the new iOS version would be available to users sometime before the end of the month. CNET will host a live blog of Apple's September 10 event. ![]() It's perhaps one of the most famous -- or infamous -- personnel moves in Silicon Valley history: then Apple CEO John Sculley's 1985 firing of Steve Jobs. But until now, we've never known much about how it happened. At a Forbes conference in Bali last week, however, Sculley opened up about the firing, telling some of the richest and most powerful people on Earth just how he came to deliver Jobs' pink slip. Signage for Tuesday's event there, which is expected to bring two new models of the iPhone, is now up, reports French tech site Igen. There's a top banner above the doors, which looks just like the one depicted in Apple's invite to the media last week, as well as some side dressings with more overlapping colors. Similar decorations went up when Apple held a special event at its campus in October 2011 to introduce the iPhone 4S. As a reminder, Apple's presentation is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PT sharp, and CNET will be there live to bring you the news. We'll have news updates, photos, commentary, and more from the event, along with a live show hosted at CNET's headquarters in San Francisco. |
